Dabo Swinney has been criticized for not making use of the transfer portal as much as other leading programs. Despite the frequent player movement in recent years, Swinney and the Tigers have seldom relied on the portal.
However, on Monday, the Tigers made their first-ever non-quarterback acquisition through the portal. According to reports, Clemson has secured a commitment from wide receiver Tristan Smith of Southeast Missouri State. Prior to Smith, Clemson had only added two players through the portal, both of whom were quarterbacks.
In 2022, the Tigers brought in QB Hunter Johnson from Northwestern, and in 2023, they added QB Paul Tyson from Arizona State. However, in 2024, Clemson did not make any additions through the transfer portal.
Tristan Smith is a solid acquisition for the Tigers, who are seeking more production at wide receiver. The FCS standout recorded 76 receptions for 934 yards and 6 touchdowns for the Redhawks in 2024. Before his breakout season at Southeast Missouri State, Smith spent two years at Hutchinson Community College, where he caught 16 passes for 231 yards and 2 touchdowns.
While Smith marks the Tigers’ first portal addition, they have seen three players depart via the portal: receivers Noble Johnson and Troy Stellato, as well as safety Sherrod Covil, all of whom will pursue opportunities elsewhere in 2025. With two receivers leaving, Smith will help add depth to the position.
The Tigers are now preparing to face the Texas Longhorns in the first round of the 2024 College Football Playoff. The game will take place at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
