Duke Basketball: Latest Update on Injured Blue Devil Guard
During the early part of the Saturday afternoon game, Duke basketball’s sophomore guard Tyrese Proctor suffered a left ankle injury in their 72-68 road loss to unranked Georgia Tech. The team later referred to it as a “lower body injury.” The Blue Devils, following their usual practice, kept details about the injury under wraps for several days.
In the latest episode of Fast Break With Jon Scheyer on Wednesday evening, the team’s second-year head coach, Jon Scheyer, provided additional information about Proctor’s condition. Scheyer mentioned, “Tyrese is doing well. It’s challenging when he goes down like that, and he couldn’t return to the game. He sprained his ankle, and he’s diligently working every day to make a swift return. While he hasn’t reached that point yet, he’s putting in tremendous effort to rejoin the team.”
Tyrese Proctor, a projected 2024 first-round draft pick alongside teammate Kyle Filipowski, serves as the team’s primary starting floor general. He boasts averages of 10.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, with shooting percentages of 43.9% from the field, 32.4% from three, and 86.7% at the free-throw line.
The severity of Proctor’s ankle sprain and the timeline for his return remain undisclosed. In his absence, there is speculation that freshman guard Caleb Foster may see increased playing time at point guard, sharing responsibilities with senior guard Jeremy Roach, who is a co-captain with Proctor, and graduate big man Ryan Young.
Although the 22nd-ranked Blue Devils (5-3, 0-1 ACC) have only four games left in their December schedule, one notable matchup looms against No. 6 Baylor (9-0, 0-0 Big 12) at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 20. Given the ACC’s perceived lack of national dominance this season, this game against the Bears could represent Duke’s final opportunity to secure a victory over a top-10 team.
Before that pivotal clash, the Blue Devils will host two unranked opponents at Cameron Indoor Stadium: Charlotte (5-3, 0-0 AAC) on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. ET and Hofstra (6-2, 0-0 Colonial Athletic) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
