The Ravens have waived receiver Diontae Johnson, marking the end of a turbulent 2024 for the former Steelers player, who was traded twice and is now a free agent. Johnson’s time with Pittsburgh ended when he was traded to the Panthers for v and a late-round pick swap. Initially, the trade appeared to favor Carolina, with Jackson being inconsistent and Johnson a streaky but reliable top receiver.
In Carolina, Johnson had a slow start but found rhythm with veteran Andy Dalton, posting respectable numbers — on pace for 73 catches, 870 yards, and seven touchdowns. However, with no playoff hopes and his contract expiring, the Panthers traded him to the Ravens in a minimal deal. In Baltimore, Johnson struggled to find playing time on a run-heavy team and was buried on the depth chart. His production plummeted, and after refusing to enter a game, he was suspended and eventually waived.
The Steelers might consider bringing Johnson back, despite valid reasons to avoid him. He knows the system and could offer the team a second option in the passing game, especially with George Pickens sidelined. Reuniting with Johnson could provide a cost-effective upgrade to a struggling receiver corps and add another weapon for the playoffs.
However, Johnson must be on his best behavior. With no value to teams at the moment, returning to Pittsburgh could allow him to prove his time in Baltimore was a fluke. If he performs well and avoids off-field issues, he could land a prove-it deal in the offseason.
For the Steelers, bringing him back could be a win, getting both Johnson and Jackson for a reduced cap hit and a boost in draft picks. If Johnson can’t stay disciplined, though, the Steelers should pass. We’ll likely know their decision by early next week.
