The Baltimore Ravens made a move to fill the spot vacated by Diontae Johnson’s release, signing wide receiver and kick returner Steven Sims Jr. Sims, waived by the Houston Texans, was added just days after the Texans claimed Johnson off waivers. This timing sets the stage for a potential reunion when the Ravens face the Texans on Christmas Day in Week 17, only days after waiving Johnson and ending a failed trade.
While the acquisition of Sims flew under the radar, it’s a savvy move for Baltimore. The 27-year-old is no stranger to the Ravens, having torched them with a 67-yard touchdown return in last season’s Divisional Playoffs. Sims brings dynamic playmaking ability to a special teams unit that’s been searching for consistency all season.
The Ravens have struggled to find reliable returners, and All-Pro cornerback Desmond King’s underwhelming performance against the Steelers, where he muffed two punts, highlighted the issue. Although King is expected to remain in the role for the upcoming game, Sims could take over if he stays healthy and proves himself.
Sims, who has played for several teams, also has a history of big plays, including a 90-yard kickoff return touchdown in 2019 with Washington. He’s shown versatility as a receiver, returner, and runner, accumulating 174 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. However, Sims has struggled with ball security, fumbling 11 times over his career. If the Ravens can help him clean up his technique, he could be a valuable asset for the stretch run.
Ultimately, the Ravens will be glad to move on from the saga involving Johnson, who never became the playmaker they hoped. With standout performances from Zay Flowers and strong support from Rashod Bateman, Mark Andrews, and Isaiah Likely, the Ravens remain well-stocked with playmakers for Lamar Jackson.
