As reported by Elliotte Friedman in his latest 32 Thoughts blog, the New York Rangers have given defenseman Zac Jones the green light to explore trade discussions with other NHL teams. The goal is for Jones to find a new team where he can secure a regular spot in the league.
Friedman’s Trade Report on Jones
Friedman didn’t offer many specifics about Jones’ situation, but he did point out one potential hurdle that could discourage some teams from pursuing him.
“There’s interest, and he’s good enough to take advantage of a new opportunity. One caveat: since he’s not a big guy, teams with a smallish blue line are an unlikelier destination.”
Jones, 24, was selected in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft but has struggled to secure a consistent spot in the league. Over five seasons with the Rangers, he has played in 94 games, tallying four goals and 21 assists. This season, he’s appeared in 26 games, contributing one goal and seven assists for a total of eight points.
Can Zac Jones Find a Spot on A Different NHL Roster?
Jones has the potential to develop into a regular NHL defenseman. In the 2022-23 season with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, he racked up 34 points in 54 games. What he needs now is a real opportunity—and the freedom to make mistakes and evolve. Without that chance, he risks being relegated to a call-up role in the NHL.
At times, players just need more time to adjust to the NHL, but the Rangers aren’t in a position to offer Jones that opportunity, which is likely why his agent is seeking a trade. However, any potential deal must benefit both teams involved.
For instance, Jones’ agent might explore an opportunity with a team like the hypothetical Utah Hockey Club, but if the trade doesn’t bring mutual value, the Rangers won’t move forward with it. Until a suitable deal comes up, Jones will stay with the Rangers or wait until he hits free agency.
