A former Oregon football wide receiver, Ryan Pellum, has been arrested following an alleged pistol-whipping incident. Pellum, whose full name is Ryan Tristan Chance Taylor, was taken into custody in Springfield on Wednesday, facing charges of assault with a firearm after reportedly pistol-whipping an individual in Long Beach, California, on Christmas Day.
Pellum, originally from Long Beach, played one season for the Ducks as a redshirt in 2023. He is the nephew of former Oregon linebacker and defensive coordinator Don Pellum, and chose to use his maternal surname when he signed with Oregon.
An athletics spokesperson from the university declined to comment, confirming only that Pellum is no longer part of the Oregon football team.
Police in Long Beach issued an extradition warrant on Tuesday, and Pellum was arrested the following day at his Springfield apartment. Court documents show that Pellum’s bail has been posted by an undisclosed individual, and he is scheduled to appear in court in California on January 23.
According to court records, Pellum allegedly struck a person on the head with a 9 mm pistol, causing a head injury that required stitches. He then reportedly fired two shots in an unknown direction. The identity of the alleged victim and their relationship to Pellum remains undisclosed.
During his arrest, Pellum reportedly acknowledged knowledge of the Oregon football team, saying people had been calling him about it, but offered no further details.
