Coast Conference Teams Eye Gophers’ Coach in Potential Move

The Miami Hurricanes are set to hire Corey Hetherman, the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Despite finishing the 2024 college football season with a 10-3 record, the Hurricanes faced defensive challenges, allowing 30 or more points in six games.

In contrast, Hetherman led one of the nation’s top defensive units, as Minnesota allowed just 16.9 points per game, ranking ninth in the FBS. The Gophers also limited opponents to 285.7 total yards per game, placing fifth in the country. They concluded their season with an 8-5 record and a 24-10 win over Virginia Tech in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Minnesota’s defense saw significant improvement in 2024 compared to the previous year. In 2023, the Gophers allowed 368.4 yards per game (56th) and gave up 26.7 points per game (tied for 69th). Corey Hetherman, a former quarterback at Fitchburg State from 2003 to 2005, has had a diverse coaching career since starting in 2006.

According to the Pioneer Press, Miami will pay Minnesota a six-figure buyout to bring Hetherman on board. Minnesota had extended his contract to $1 million per year at the end of the season.
