The Pittsburgh Steelers face numerous questions this offseason after a disappointing end to the 2024 regular season, which included a four-game losing streak and a crushing playoff defeat to the Baltimore Ravens. Despite making the postseason in four of the last five years, the team hasn’t won a playoff game since January 2017 and has been largely average over the past five seasons.
One area of uncertainty is quarterback. Russell Wilson, the Steelers’ starter for much of the season, had a strong start but struggled down the stretch, showing signs of decline. Justin Fields also started several games early on, posting a solid 4-2 record with 10 touchdowns and only two turnovers, but he’s also set to become an unrestricted free agent.
With both quarterbacks heading into free agency, GM Omar Khan may look to start fresh and bring in a new signal caller. One name being considered as a trade target is Geno Smith, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks.
Smith, who will turn 35 next season and is entering the final year of his contract, may not return to Seattle after 2024, especially with a new head coach in place. He’s owed $31 million in 2025, making him an expensive addition, but also a proven one.
Over the past two seasons, Smith has revitalized his career, earning Pro Bowl honors in both 2022 and 2023 while leading the Seahawks to three straight winning seasons, including a playoff berth in 2023. Smith is known for his accuracy, completing 70.4% of his passes in 2024 and leading the league with a 69.8% completion rate in 2022.
While Smith would come at a cost, his experience and consistency could make him a solid option for the Steelers, serving as a bridge quarterback who could complement their run-heavy offense and play-action passing game.
