Broncos QB Seen as the Key to Rival’s Desperate Quarterback Search.
Zach Wilson spent the 2024 regular season as the Denver Broncos’ emergency third quarterback. He dressed for games but never saw any action after the preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals. While the offseason plans are still taking shape, Wilson has largely been overlooked in free-agent discussions.
However, one recent Super Bowl champion may provide the perfect fit: the Los Angeles Rams.
“The Rams desperately need a young quarterback to develop behind Matthew Stafford,” ESPN’s Benjamin Solak noted in an article updated on January 19.
Zach Wilson completed 63.6% of his passes for 396 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no interceptions during the 2024 preseason.
The Broncos acquired Wilson in a trade with the New York Jets before the draft. Broncos head coach Sean Payton mentioned that the team had been eyeing Wilson for some time and praised his progress during the offseason program and preseason. However, Denver selected Bo Nix with the No. 12 overall pick and named Jarrett Stidham as the backup quarterback, leaving Wilson to serve as QB3.
With Wilson in the final year of his four-year, $35 million contract, the Broncos also declined his $22 million fifth-year option, setting him up for free agency.
“The No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft was inactive as an emergency quarterback for all 18 games,” wrote 9News’ Mike Klis on January 15. “Expect Wilson to explore a better opportunity for playing time than what he has behind Nix in Denver.”
