After a challenging finish to the 2024 season, the Minnesota Vikings have confirmed the future of head coach Kevin O’Connell. Despite speculation about his potential move to another team, O’Connell will remain with the Vikings following a multi-year contract extension. Sources indicate that securing O’Connell was Minnesota’s top priority, with discussions beginning right after the season ended. At just 39 years old, O’Connell will continue to lead the team into the 2025 season.
Since taking over as head coach in 2022, O’Connell has been instrumental in turning the Vikings’ fortunes around. After a strong 13-4 record in his first year, the team fell short in the Wild Card Round. The Vikings faced a setback in 2023, finishing 7-10, but rebounded in 2024 with a 14-3 record, though they were again eliminated in the playoffs. O’Connell’s leadership and the unexpected resurgence of quarterback Sam Darnold were key to the team’s success.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Vikings face uncertainty around their quarterback situation, with Darnold’s future up in the air and rookie J.J. McCarthy recovering from an ACL injury. Nonetheless, O’Connell’s extension ensures continuity as the team strives for further success.
Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf praised O’Connell’s leadership, calling him an innovative play caller and strong motivator. O’Connell expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, thanking the Wilf family, his family, and the team’s staff for their support. He also acknowledged the Vikings fans, stating, “You are the best in the NFL,” and expressed excitement for the future. O’Connell is eager to continue building on the positive culture he’s established in Minnesota.
