Yankees Bolster Pitching Staff with Under-the-Radar Signing

Yankees Make Under-the Radar Pitching Addition off Waivers

The New York Yankees made an intriguing roster move on Thursday by claiming pitcher Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, the team announced. Contreras, who was originally part of the Yankees organization before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, was ranked as Baseball America’s No. 80 overall prospect prior to the 2022 season, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.

While the Yankees have made several high-profile acquisitions this offseason, they recognize the value of bolstering their depth. Contreras, a 25-year-old right-hander with considerable potential, could turn out to be a valuable addition to their pitching staff.

Contreras made his MLB debut with Pittsburgh in 2021, where the Pirates hoped he would develop into a reliable starter. After appearing in just one game that season, he got a more significant opportunity in 2022, pitching in 21 games—18 of which were starts. He posted a solid 3.79 ERA with 86 strikeouts over 95 innings.

However, the young pitcher struggled over the next two seasons, prompting the Pirates to part ways with him during the 2024 campaign. Contreras then spent time with the Los Angeles Angels before being waived by the Orioles, setting the stage for his latest opportunity with New York.

Despite losing star outfielder Juan Soto in free agency, the Yankees remain optimistic heading into the 2025 season. They have strengthened their roster by bringing in top talents such as Max Fried and Cody Bellinger. Some experts believe the Yankees have a strong chance to win the 2025 World Series.

Returning to the Fall Classic after reaching the World Series in 2024 is certainly within reach, given the current landscape of the American League. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off their 2024 championship, are widely regarded as the favorites to win it all again in 2025.
