Vikings Eyeing Big Re-Sign for $42 Million Star Free Agent!
The Minnesota Vikings are making a strong push to keep one of their top free agents in town. With over 20 players hitting the free-agent market, the Vikings have seven players ranked among the NFL’s best, according to Pro Football Focus. But safety Bynum, who has emerged as a standout, is a priority for the team. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on January 29 that the Vikings and Bynum have discussed a contract extension, with both sides remaining optimistic about striking a deal before mid-March.
Ranked as the No. 3 free-agent safety and 31st overall, Bynum is expected to command a three-year deal worth $42 million. The 2021 fourth-round pick has flourished in defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ system, showing impressive versatility after transitioning from college cornerback to safety. Bynum’s performance over the past two seasons includes 233 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 12 pass breakups, solidifying his status as a key defensive asset.
The Vikings’ decision on whether to pay Bynum may ultimately depend on Harrison Smith’s future. At 35, Smith is also up for free agency and is mulling retirement for the second consecutive offseason. He and Bynum form a key safety tandem, but Smith’s potential exit could influence the Vikings’ plans. Additionally, the team faces uncertainty in their entire secondary, with starting cornerbacks Byron Murphy Jr., Stephon Gilmore, and Shaq Barrett, along with backup Fabian Moreau, all set to hit free agency. The Vikings have several tough decisions ahead as they look to shape their defensive backfield for the future.
