The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to strengthen their offense, and one trade suggestion has them landing a potential first-line forward.
The PuckGM tool on PuckPedia allows users to propose trades, and one user has put forward a deal that would send Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks to the Red Wings.
Red Wings acquire:
Canucks acquire:
- JT Compher
- Michael Rasmussen
- Nate Danielson
- Trey Augustine
- 2025 first-round pick
The proposed trade would be a major move, with the Red Wings acquiring Elias Pettersson in exchange for two NHL players, two highly-regarded prospects, and a first-round pick.
Pettersson, in the first year of his eight-year, $92.8 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks, has been a standout player for the team. However, his name has surfaced in trade rumors due to a reported conflict with teammate JT Miller. Should he join Detroit, Pettersson would likely slot onto their top line, boosting their offensive capabilities. So far this season, he has played 43 games, recording 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points.
In return, the Red Wings would send a first-round pick, with the two prospects being key components of the deal. Augustine is one of the top goaltending prospects in the NHL, while Danielson was selected ninth overall in the 2023 draft.
Detroit would also trade Compher, who is in the second year of his five-year, $25.5 million contract. He would become Vancouver’s third-line center, offering solid defense and offensive contributions. Compher has played 48 games this season, recording 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points.
Additionally, Rasmussen, in the first year of his four-year, $12.8 million deal, could fill a middle-six forward role for the Canucks. He has posted 7 goals and 7 assists for 14 points in 49 games.
Canucks Likely to Deal Miller or Pettersson
Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford has acknowledged the ongoing issue as serious and one that needs immediate attention.
“I’ve felt for a long time that there was a solution here because everyone has worked on it, including the involved parties,” Rutherford told the Globe and Mail. “But it only gets resolved temporarily, and then it resurfaces. So, it certainly seems like there isn’t a good solution that would keep this group together.”
While Rutherford would prefer not to trade either player, he believes that might be the necessary step.
“We’ve had those discussions, and I think the parties understand that and have tried,” Rutherford explained. “But as you know, sometimes emotions run deep, and even when people try, sometimes they can’t get past it. It certainly seems like that’s the situation here.”
The Canucks are currently 22-17-10 and sitting outside a playoff spot.
Red Wings Fighting for Playoff Spot
Detroit is determined to end its playoff drought this season.
The Red Wings have been on a strong run recently, and veteran forward Patrick Kane says the team is focused on taking things one game at a time.
“You take it as a challenge,” Kane explained. “Under Todd, we’ve built a bit of a foundation where we know what to expect going forward, and we feel confident about it. So, we’re just playing every game, taking it one at a time, and seeing what happens.”
Currently, the Red Wings are 24-21-5 and outside of a playoff spot.
