Ex-Phillie reliever DFA’d after odd Mets offseason.

Life in MLB can be unpredictable, and for Dylan Covey, things took an unexpected turn. The former Phillies pitcher was designated for assignment by the New York Mets on Thursday, despite not getting a chance to prove himself. With the addition of veteran reliever Ryne Stanek, the Mets needed to free up space on their 40-man roster, making Covey the odd man out.

The move comes as a bit of a shock, especially since Covey was one of the first free agents to sign a major league deal after the 2024 World Series. He had also recently participated in the Mets’ Amazin’ Day fan fest at Citi Field. Now, just weeks before spring training, Covey might find himself on the job hunt.

Covey had spent the previous two seasons with the Phillies after being claimed off waivers from the Dodgers in May 2023. He posted a solid 3.69 ERA with 16 walks and 27 strikeouts in 39 innings over 28 appearances. His impressive 2.00 ERA in his final 15 games with the Phillies gave him a real shot at making their 2024 Opening Day roster.

A shoulder injury during spring training last year derailed Covey’s chance to secure a spot with the Phillies, sidelining him for several months. However, he impressed in his return with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, Lehigh Valley, posting a strong 1.20 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, along with three saves and 16 strikeouts in 15 innings. That performance likely earned him a big-league contract with the Mets.

Now, after being designated for assignment by the Mets, Covey faces another challenge—finding a new opportunity to pitch in the majors. Whether that means joining another team or accepting a minor league assignment with the Mets, Covey remains hopeful for a return to the big leagues soon.
