Pirates Lock in AL East Star with Blockbuster $1.15 Million Deal

PITTSBURGH — On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates and left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza agreed to a one-year, $1.15 million deal.

Mayza, 33, posted a 0-2 record with a 6.33 ERA across 50 relief appearances last season for the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. However, he didn’t give up any runs in his three postseason appearances.

Over seven seasons with Toronto (2017-24) and New York, Mayza has a 20-9 record, a 3.88 ERA, and four saves. He underwent Tommy John surgery on September 18, 2019, just five days after injuring his elbow in a game against the Yankees, but made his MLB comeback in April 2021.

In a related move, infielder Alika Williams was designated for assignment.
