Cooper Kupp, the Super Bowl 56 MVP, recently addressed speculation about his future with the Los Angeles Rams, revealing that the team plans to trade him this off-season. Kupp’s two-year, $80.1 million contract extension, signed after his incredible 2021-22 season, includes a nearly $30 million cap hit for next season. The Rams could reduce this figure by releasing or trading him with a post-June 1 designation.
Kupp shared that he is highly motivated and healthy, preparing for a strong future in the league. He acknowledged his deep connection with the LA community and teammates, expressing gratitude for their support. Despite a tough 1-4 start to the season, the Rams had explored trading Kupp but ultimately chose to keep him, as the team has a history of making pragmatic decisions, such as trading Jared Goff and releasing Todd Gurley and Robert Woods before their big contracts began.
Kupp has been a central figure in the Rams’ offense since being drafted in 2017, with 634 catches for 7,776 yards and 57 touchdowns. His memorable 2021-22 season saw him win the receiving triple crown and the Super Bowl MVP. However, his production has dipped in recent years, particularly after an ankle injury sidelined him for four games this season. Kupp’s performance in the final five regular-season games and playoffs was his least productive stretch.
As Kupp’s future remains uncertain, fellow receiver Puka Nacua, mentored by Kupp, has emerged as a star, averaging 88.4 yards per game. With Kupp potentially leaving, Nacua is expected to be the Rams’ top receiver next season, while quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has a close relationship with both players, is still deciding whether to return for a 17th season. The Rams’ passing game faces significant changes, with other veteran receivers possibly leaving and a new offensive coordinator in place.
