The New York Mets have had an exceptional offseason, securing two major wins. They shocked the baseball world by signing New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto to a record $765 million deal. They also successfully re-signed homegrown All-Star Pete Alonso after lengthy negotiations.
With their 2025 roster mostly set, the Mets were reportedly still eyeing another starting pitcher, with Padres ace Dylan Cease being a potential target. However, an update from Jon Heyman of the New York Post dashes those hopes, putting an end to trade talks.
Dylan Cease’s 2024 stats: 14-11 record, 3.47 ERA, 1.067 WHIP, 224 strikeouts, 189.1 innings pitched.
Jon Heyman reports that if the Mets were to pursue Dylan Cease, the Padres would likely target top prospects like Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams, and Luisangel Acuña in return. However, Heyman notes that the Mets wouldn’t consider a package of Sproat and Williams for a short-term player like Cease.
Sproat and Williams finished 2024 as the Mets’ top two prospects, with Acuña ranked 12th. Despite Cease’s solid performance, he hasn’t made an All-Star team in his six seasons.
With a $13.7 million contract for 2025, Cease is a valuable pitcher, but owner Steve Cohen has made it clear that the Mets’ strategy is to build a strong farm system. While willing to spend, trading top-tier prospects for a solid but not elite pitcher doesn’t align with the Mets’ long-term vision.
