Geno Smith’s attempts to secure a new contract with the Seahawks last summer fell short, leaving uncertainty about Seattle’s quarterback future beyond 2025. With one year left on his deal and no guarantees on his $14.8 million base salary, a key decision looms as his $16 million roster bonus approaches next month. Head coach Mike Macdonald is hopeful for a resolution, and signs point toward progress.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero report that Seattle is expected to “address” Smith’s contract soon. A restructure could lower his 2025 cap hit, but an extension appears to be the preferred option. While Smith seeks a new commitment, the Seahawks are expected to explore other quarterback options before making a final decision.
With limited cap space, Seattle is unlikely to pursue high-profile free agents like Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, or Kirk Cousins (if released). The team lacks a clear successor, as Sam Howell’s brief debut didn’t establish him as a long-term solution. Given these factors, retaining Smith remains a logical move.
Smith, who has been in Seattle since 2020 and took over as QB1 after Russell Wilson’s departure, is under contract through 2025 on a three-year, $75 million deal signed in 2023. While a massive long-term extension is unlikely, a short-term restructure could provide stability. With aspirations to play until 40, Smith’s future may still involve an extended run in Seattle—if the team can work out a deal soon.
