Dabo Swinney taps AAC head coach to bolster Clemson’s defense

Clemson football is bringing former East Carolina head coach Mike Houston on board as a defensive analyst, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Houston, who coached the Pirates for six seasons (2019-2024), was dismissed after a 3-4 start last season, finishing with a 27-38 record at ECU. He has an extensive coaching background, beginning in 1994 with stints at North Carolina high schools, including a decade at Asheville’s Roberson. Houston made the jump to college football in 2006, serving as defensive coordinator at Brevard (Division III) and Lenoir-Rhyne (Division II) before becoming a head coach in 2011.

He led Lenoir-Rhyne, The Citadel (2014-2015), and James Madison (2016-2018), where he won an FCS national title in 2016. He concluded his time at East Carolina with a 106-62 career coaching record.

Houston will collaborate with Clemson’s new defensive coordinator, Tom Allen. His hiring marks the second analyst addition for Clemson in the last five days, joining offensive analyst Lonnie Galloway. Clemson’s spring practice kicks off on February 28, with the spring game set for April 5 at Memorial Stadium.
