Jets to Sign $14.5 Million Veteran Super Bowl Champ as D.J. Reed’s Replacement

The New York Jets will have some significant gaps to fill on their defense next season.

Cornerback D.J. Reed became a standout player during his time in New York, steadily improving over his three years playing alongside Sauce Gardner in the Jets’ talented secondary. However, Reed is now a free agent, and it seems likely he won’t return to the team.

If Reed does leave, the Jets will need to figure out how to fill the void he leaves. They could either draft a cornerback with one of their top picks or spend in free agency to replace him with a similar player.

Could a member of new head coach Aaron Glenn’s 2024 Detroit Lions defense be the perfect fit to step into Reed’s role?

On Monday, USA Today’s Nick Brinkerhoff predicted that the Jets would sign free-agent cornerback Carlton Davis, who had a strong one-year, $14.5 million stint with the Lions in 2024.

“Davis excelled in Glenn’s system last season in Detroit, making him an ideal candidate to follow the coach to the Jets,” Brinkerhoff wrote.

“He’s likely to be one of the top cornerbacks available and could end up being too expensive, but the fit seems too good to overlook. It’s expected that some of Glenn’s former players will join ‘Gang Green,’ and Davis is certainly one of the top options.”

Davis, 28, recorded two interceptions, 11 passes defended, and a 77.0 passer rating allowed in coverage last season. He is also a Super Bowl champion, having played a key role in the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ victory.

Glenn is likely to help the Jets secure a couple of exciting free-agent signings this offseason. Davis would be a thrilling addition to the strong, motivated New York defense heading into 2025.
