Pirates’ Offseason Acquisition Set to be Sidelined Due to Injury

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (WKBN) – Andrew Destin and Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report that Spencer Horwitz, the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ offseason trade acquisition, will be sidelined during Spring Training due to a wrist injury.

The report states that Horwitz underwent surgery over the offseason and is currently wearing a cast.

Horwitz, expected to be the Pirates’ starting first baseman, was part of a three-team trade that involved the Guardians and Blue Jays. In the deal, pitcher Luis Ortiz and two pitching prospects were sent to Cleveland, while second baseman Andrew Gimenez went to Toronto.

Horwitz’s availability for Opening Day is uncertain.

Last season with Toronto, Horwitz posted a .265 batting average, with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs.
