A year ago, there were many questions surrounding the Gophers’ coordinators. Now, 12 months later, there appears to be greater stability, and the University of Minnesota has raised its assistant coach salary pool by over $1 million.
With the dust settled around the #Gophers staff, I did my annual dive into their 2025 contracts.
A look at who makes what (including Fleck), which assistants have multi-year deals, and more.

Ryan Burns from 247Sports recently published his annual article analyzing Minnesota’s coaching contracts for the upcoming season, revealing that the combined salary for the assistant coaches will total $5.5 million, setting a new record for the school. He provided detailed insights into the specifics of each coach’s contract.
Notable highlights include a significant salary increase for defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman, whose pay will rise from $800k last season to $1.2 million in 2025. Offensive coordinator Greg Harbaugh Jr. is set to earn $730k in 2025, which is likely to keep him toward the lower end of the Big Ten salary scale.
Last offseason, Minnesota lost long-time defensive coordinator Joe Rossi to Michigan State, where he took on the same role. His departure was heavily influenced by a substantial pay raise. Despite the Gophers’ increase in the assistant coach salary pool, they still rank near the bottom of the Big Ten.
For comparison, Ohio State and Georgia’s assistant coach salary pools exceeded $10 million in 2024, while Wisconsin’s was at $5.3 million and Iowa’s at $7.9 million, according to USA Today’s assistant coach database.
With many coaching staffs across the country still in flux, there will likely be further increases in salary pools at other schools, but Minnesota’s move to boost pay shouldn’t go unnoticed.
