Max Kepler is experiencing a new chapter in his career, as he dons a Philadelphia Phillies uniform for the first time after signing a one-year, $10 million contract in December. At 32, the outfielder is adjusting to new teammates, coaches, and a revamped hitting approach aimed at revitalizing his offensive production.

Initially nervous about stepping into the Phillies’ clubhouse, Kepler has begun to find his rhythm with the help of hitting coach Kevin Long. Kepler displayed his revamped swing in the Phillies‘ Grapefruit League opener, hitting a clutch bases-loaded single that drove in two runs. He later walked and scored, reflecting his growing comfort at the plate.
Kepler’s adjustments stem from Long’s guidance during spring training in Arizona, where he was encouraged to engage his legs more for balance, move closer to the plate, and tilt his bat toward the dugout. These changes are aimed at improving his swing path and making it more direct to the hitting zone, helping him rediscover the power he’s known for.
Last season, Kepler hit .253 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs, finishing with a .682 OPS before a knee injury sidelined him in September. After undergoing core surgery in October, he’s now fully healthy and optimistic about returning to his 2019-2023 form, which featured a .770 OPS and a 110 OPS+.
Off the field, Kepler is adjusting to a new clubhouse environment for the first time since signing with the Twins in 2009. He’s embraced the challenge of getting to know his new teammates and is enjoying the welcoming atmosphere.
As the Phillies prepare for the 2025 season, they’re relying on Kepler’s renewed approach and health to make him a key contributor in their lineup. Early signs show he’s on the right track.
