Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan reaffirmed on Tuesday, February 25, that the team’s priority is to re-sign either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback before free agency begins.
However, he also pointed out that until a deal is made, “all options are on the table” for the position. This likely includes top free-agent quarterback Sam Darnold, a Pro Bowler with the Minnesota Vikings, who could become available.

On February 26, ESPN analytics expert Seth Walder predicted that Darnold would be the Steelers’ starting quarterback when the 2025 season starts in Week 1. While Walder acknowledged that retaining Fields remains a possibility, he raised the question: “If the Steelers truly valued him, why did they keep playing Russell Wilson instead?”
Walder also expressed some doubt about how Darnold would perform without Kevin O’Connell and Justin Jefferson but noted that he is probably the best free-agent quarterback available. He suggested that the Steelers have the most to offer Darnold, including a potentially strong defense, a history of winning under Mike Tomlin, and a lack of a high draft pick, which reduces the likelihood of them selecting a first-round rookie quarterback.
