One of the more intriguing running back evaluations in this draft centers on Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo. Known for his high-energy play and fan-favorite status in college, the question remains whether his style will translate to the NFL. The Broncos are certainly taking a close look at Skattebo and even met with him at the Combine.
Standing at 5’11” and weighing 215 pounds, Skattebo is a powerful runner who is also dependable as a receiver out of the backfield. While he lacks top-tier athleticism, it’s uncertain whether his playing style will transition to the next level. Nevertheless, he remains one of the most exciting college players to watch, promising excitement for whoever drafts him.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein draws a comparison between and Steelers running back Jaylen Warren, describing him as a “carnage creator” with a compact frame and exceptional contact balance. Skattebo is tough to bring down, breaking through second-level tacklers and bouncing off defenders for extra yards. His ability to quickly read blocks and his elusiveness early in runs are traits that set him apart, though his lack of elite speed and the challenge of facing stronger tacklers at the next level remain concerns. His skills as a receiver out of the backfield could further enhance his draft appeal. Skattebo’s physicality and edge make him a solid candidate for a complementary back with three-down potential, helping to wear down opposing defense
I’m eager to see how he performs at the Combine. While he may not have the explosiveness or top-end speed of other backs in this draft, his elite contact balance, aggressive style, and receiving ability make him a compelling prospect.
Sean Payton, known for his traditional coaching style, might find Skattebo appealing. He could be used in short-yardage situations, the passing game, and potentially even in Taysom Hill-like roles (he’s thrown a touchdown pass). I expect Skattebo to be a Day 3 pick, and while I’d prefer to see him drafted as the second back, his style fits well with what Sean Payton likes to do.
