Steelers Reach Out with Major Offer to National Champion QB

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are expanding their quarterback search ahead of the 2025 season, adding a fourth name to their NFL Combine meetings list. According to Chris Halicke of DK Pittsburgh Sports, the team recently held an informal session with Ohio State quarterback Will Howard during their visit to Indianapolis.

Howard has become a key name to follow for the Steelers this offseason. While the team is eyeing a veteran quarterback to start in 2025— with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson among the leading candidates— they’re also exploring the draft for potential backup options with a rookie quarterback.

Howard, who led the Buckeyes to a National Championship in college football’s inaugural 12-team playoff, had an impressive season, throwing for 4,010 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, completing 73.1% of his passes.

“From what I hear, Howard made a strong impression during his meeting with the Steelers,” Halicke reported.

However, Howard did not meet with head coach Mike Tomlin or general manager Omar Khan during his visit.

In addition to Howard, the Steelers also met with other quarterback prospects at the combine, including Quinn Ewers from Texas, Jaxon Dart from Ole Miss, and Max Brosmer from Minnesota. They’ve also had discussions with Alabama’s Jalen Milroe at the Senior Bowl.

As Pittsburgh continues its quarterback evaluation throughout the offseason, expect them to focus on Pro Days and top 30 visits. While they aren’t likely to target a first-round quarterback, it wouldn’t be surprising if they bring in a young talent later in the draft to add depth to their quarterback room.
