While the New England Patriots are in desperate need of a complete offensive overhaul, they also have significant work to do on their defense this offseason.
One of the team’s biggest weaknesses heading into the upcoming months is their lack of a pass rush. The Patriots finished 2024 with just 28 sacks, placing them last in the NFL in that category.
With plenty of cap space to sign free agents, the Pats could also turn to the trade market to fill this glaring void. Joe Summers of Chowder & Champions has proposed a potential trade that would bring Tennessee Titans edge rusher Harold Landry to New England.
The proposed deal would have the Patriots sending a fourth-round draft pick to the Titans in exchange for Landry, a move that would significantly bolster New England’s front seven.
“Landry has two years left on his deal with cap hits north of $24 million each season. He’s requested a trade, reducing the Titans’ leverage,” wrote Summers. “New England has the cap space to absorb his contract, and Landry had tremendous success with [Mike] Vrabel in Tennessee.”
It’s easy to see why Landry would be motivated to reunite with Vrabel, under whom he earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2021. That season, Landry posted 75 tackles and 12 sacks.
After a torn ACL sidelined him for the 2022 season, Landry returned in 2023 and remained productive, recording 17.5 sacks over the last two seasons.
“For Tennessee, receiving a pick near the top 100 for a player who intends to leave would be a solid return,” Summers added. “They’d do right by Landry by sending him to reunite with his former coach, while also potentially using that pick to draft his replacement.”
It will be interesting to see if the Patriots can make a move for the 28-year-old edge rusher in the coming weeks.
