
The Detroit Red Wings have officially assigned center Sheldon Dries to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Dries, 30, has played 48 games for the Griffins in the 2024-25 season, leading the team in several categories, including 19 goals (tied for 1st), 27 points (5th), a plus-six rating (tied for 3rd), 29 penalty minutes (tied for 9th), three power play goals (tied for 4th), six power play points (5th), one shorthanded goal (tied for 3rd), six game-winning goals (1st), and 108 shots (4th). Standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 178 pounds, Dries spent the entirety of the 2023-24 season with the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL, where he ranked among the team’s top performers with 29 goals (1st), 23 assists (7th), 52 points (3rd), a plus-six rating (5th), 45 penalty minutes (6th), six power play goals (2nd), 16 power play points (3rd), four shorthanded goals (1st), two game-winning goals (7th), and 167 shots (1st) across 55 games. He also recorded three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in six Calder Cup Playoff games with Abbotsford.

Originally signed as a free agent by the AHL’s Texas Stars on May 10, 2017, Dries has accumulated 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists) and 59 penalty minutes in 122 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks from 2018-19 onward. Additionally, he has tallied 231 points (132 goals, 99 assists), a plus-32 rating, and 251 penalty minutes in 322 AHL games with the Stars, Colorado Eagles, Canucks, and Griffins.
A native of Macomb, Michigan, Dries played four seasons at Western Michigan University from 2013-17, where he served as team captain during his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Over his collegiate career, Dries recorded 84 points (44 goals, 40 assists) and 136 penalty minutes in 148 games, earning a spot on the NCHC’s Second All-Star Team in his senior season. Before college, Dries played for the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League from 2010-13, amassing 87 points (41 goals, 46 assists), a plus-34 rating, and 235 penalty minutes in 116 games, contributing to the team’s 2012 Clark Cup championship. On the international level, Dries helped Team USA win a gold medal at the 2012 World Junior A Challenge, collecting seven points (1 goal, 6 assists) and four penalty minutes in four games.
