Spartans Lock Down 5-Star Quarterback Recruit

The Michigan State Spartans had a disappointing 2024 season, ending with a sub-.500 record for the third consecutive year. First-year head coach Jonathan Smith, who previously led the Oregon State Beavers for six seasons, took over the program in East Lansing, Michigan.

To turn the Big Ten program around, Michigan State needs to continue improving its recruiting efforts. On Friday, the Spartans secured their second commitment for the 2026 recruiting class.

After receiving a commitment from three-star athlete Joey Caudill in January, Michigan State landed a major blue-chip recruit in quarterback Kayd Coffman.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Coffman is ranked as a three-star quarterback in On3’s industry ranking, but the site rates him as a four-star prospect. He currently holds the 22nd spot in their quarterback position rankings.

The Kentwood, Michigan, native grew up about an hour away from Michigan State’s campus.

Coffman shared the reasons behind his commitment to the Spartans with On3’s Steve Wiltfong.

“It was definitely the coaches and how I connected with them,” Coffman explained. “Coach (Jon) Boyer, especially. I really connected with him during junior day, and I feel like I fit in there. They have a plan to develop me to the next level.”

“I just felt it was the right decision,” he continued. “I’ve been thinking about it since November when they offered, praying about it, and reflecting on how I see myself there. I really think we can do special things, and that excitement made me want to be a part of it.”

In his junior season at East Kentwood (MI), Coffman threw for 1,456 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just one interception, while also rushing for 239 yards and two touchdowns.
