The University of Minnesota has terminated Ben Johnson as head coach of the men’s basketball team. The decision was made public early Thursday morning, following a 72-64 defeat to Northwestern in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, marking the end of the 2024-25 season.
University of Minnesota Athletic Director Mark Coyle released a statement saying, “I met with Ben face-to-face early this morning after the team got back to Minneapolis from the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament and told him we were moving in a new direction with leadership. These choices are tough and come after thorough reflection and assessment. Our program is expected to contend for titles, and regrettably, we haven’t achieved that over the past four years.”
Coyle added, “This is a highly attractive position in one of the top conferences and cities in the country, and we’re determined to excel both on and off the court. We offer an exceptional experience for our student-athletes, boast one of the finest practice facilities nationwide, and play in a legendary arena. We have all the tools for success, and we’re launching a nationwide search for our next men’s basketball coach right away.”
During Johnson’s four-year tenure, the Gophers recorded a 56-70 overall record and a 22-57 mark in Big Ten competition. The team never qualified for the NCAA Tournament under his leadership, with their lone postseason appearance being the NIT after the 2023-24 season, the only year they finished above .500.
