Patriots Eyeing TE Pro Bowl as Major Asset for Trade in NFL Draft

The New England Patriots haven’t made any significant moves this offseason, only adding wide receiver Mack Hollins through free agency.

This is not enough, especially considering the Patriots had more cap space than any other NFL team heading into the offseason.

Thankfully, there’s still time left in the offseason, even though most top free agents have already been signed. New England appears to be interested in Stefon Diggs, and they could always look to the deep wide receiver class in next month’s NFL Draft.

However, Bernd Buchmasser of Pats Pulpit has suggested a rather unusual trade target for the Patriots: Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts.

Buchmasser mentioned Pitts in an article about how the Patriots might use their remaining cap space, which seems odd considering they already have two tight ends, Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper—who they just re-signed.

Pitts is a former Pro Bowler, and if New England were seriously considering him or another top-tier tight end, it seems unlikely they would have kept Hooper.

Nevertheless, Pitts made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season in 2021 with 68 catches for 1,026 yards and a touchdown. However, his performance has been underwhelming since then, which is part of why he’s now viewed as a trade candidate with just one year remaining on his contract.

Last season, the former first-round pick had 47 receptions for 602 yards and four touchdowns. While decent, it fell short of what the Falcons had hoped for.

Still, Pitts is undeniably talented and could potentially thrive in the right system. Whether New England could provide that environment is uncertain, and it seems unlikely the Patriots would give up valuable assets for a player at a position where they are already well-stocked.
