Ravens Snag Elite Nickelback with a Major Trade Deal

The Ravens have finalized a one-year deal with seasoned cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, bolstering their secondary with his experience and skill.

Baltimore needed to fill a gap at cornerback following Brandon Stephens’ departure to the Jets in free agency. Now in his ninth NFL season, Awuzie provides the Ravens with a reliable outside corner and enhances their flexibility alongside key starters Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins.

Having at least three cornerbacks of starting quality is crucial, and the Ravens aim to leverage Humphrey’s standout slot performance by gaining more positional versatility with this addition.

Awuzie, aged 29, was let go earlier this month after inking a three-year, $36 million contract with the Tennessee Titans last offseason—the largest deal awarded to an unrestricted free agent cornerback at the time. Since his release, he won’t impact Baltimore’s compensatory pick calculations for 2026.

Awuzie began last season as a starter for the first three games before a groin injury forced him onto injured reserve. He made his comeback in Week 14, snagging an interception in his return game, and wrapped up the year with 26 tackles and four passes defensed. The Titans boasted the league’s best pass defense during that campaign.

Awuzie knows the AFC North well, having spent the previous three seasons (2021-2023) with the Cincinnati Bengals. His standout year was 2021, when he started a personal-best 14 games, recording two interceptions, 64 tackles, and 14 passes defensed. That season, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 23rd-highest graded cornerback. However, a torn ACL in 2022 interrupted his momentum.

Selected in the second round from Colorado in 2017, Awuzie kicked off his NFL journey with the Dallas Cowboys. Over four seasons, he started 42 games, earning a reputation as a tough and dependable cornerback. He also excels in run defense, ranking as Pro Football Focus’ 19th-highest graded cornerback in that category last season.

Awuzie will vie with Jalyn Armour-Davis and T.J. Tampa for the Ravens’ No. 3 cornerback spot behind Humphrey and Wiggins. Going into the NFL Draft, cornerback stood out as perhaps Baltimore’s most pressing need. Signing Awuzie strengthens their depth, positioning the Ravens to target the best available talent in the draft.
