Transfer portal: Gophers Asst. Coach to Help Land Oklahoma Guard

The Gophers are among the many teams that have reached out to Oklahoma transfer guard Duke Miles, according to Tobias Bass of The Athletic.

A total of 19 schools have contacted Miles, but Minnesota is not one of the teams he has a visit scheduled with, making their chances of landing him seem slim. An interesting factor, however, is that new Gophers assistant coach Armon Gates spent the past two seasons with Porter Moser’s staff at Oklahoma, which could provide a connection between Gates and Miles. Still, financial offers will likely be the key driver in the transfer portal.

Miles, a sixth-year senior in the 2025-26 season, will be playing his final year of eligibility. After being lightly recruited out of Alabama in 2020, the 6’2″ guard spent his first three years at Troy, where he averaged 14 points in 2022-23 before suffering a season-ending injury. He then transferred to High Point, where he starred in the Big South Conference, averaging 17.5 points and 3.6 assists per game during the 2023-24 season.

In his first year at a power conference school last season, Miles started all 34 games for Oklahoma, averaging 9.4 points and 1.4 steals per game. On relatively low shot volume, he shot a highly efficient 51% from the field, 43% from three-point range, and 83% from the free throw line. Oklahoma made the NCAA Tournament as a No. 9 seed but lost to UConn in the first round.

Gates is now part of Niko Medved’s inaugural Gophers coaching staff, alongside returning assistant Dave Thorson and former Colorado State assistant Brian Cooley, who also joined Medved in Minneapolis. Gates brings 16 years of assistant coaching experience across eight different programs.

Currently, the Gophers’ roster includes rising sophomore Isaac Asuma and incoming freshman Kai Shinholster at guard, with CSU’s Kyan Evans remaining a notable name to watch.
