Notre Dame’s quarterback competition for 2025 has reportedly narrowed to two contenders, as veteran QB Steve Angeli is expected to enter the transfer portal.
Angeli, who redshirted in 2022 and still has two years of eligibility left, saw the most game action among the candidates. He made one start during his time with the Irish, leading the team to a win in the 2023 Sun Bowl against Oregon State. However, his role shifted when Riley Leonard transferred in and took over the starting job.
One of Angeli’s standout moments came in the most recent Orange Bowl, when the Westfield, New Jersey native came off the bench for an injured Leonard. He orchestrated a key scoring drive just before halftime that narrowed Penn State’s lead to 10-3 and helped spark Notre Dame’s comeback win.
Following Notre Dame’s spring football game last weekend, head coach Marcus Freeman made it clear he wanted to narrow the quarterback competition to two. With Steve Angeli now expected to enter the transfer portal, that goal has been reached. The Irish are moving forward with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey as the remaining contenders for the starting job.
