Gophers quarterback Zach Pyron is re-entering the transfer portal, according to multiple reports on Thursday afternoon.
Zach Pyron, who signed with Minnesota this past winter after three seasons at Georgia Tech, is entering the transfer portal once again. During his time with the Yellow Jackets, Pyron saw limited playing time, completing 56.8% of his passes for 995 yards and recording 11 total touchdowns. He made four starts at quarterback during his stint there.
A former four-star recruit, Pyron was expected to compete with redshirt freshman Drake Lindsey for the starting job this offseason. However, it quickly became evident that Lindsey had a strong hold on the position. At a recent spring practice, Pyron was receiving fewer reps than both Dylan Wittke and Max Shikenjanski, suggesting he had slipped to fourth on the depth chart.
While it’s not officially confirmed that Lindsey has secured the starting role, he is the only quarterback on the roster with any collegiate passing experience, having attempted five passes last season. His status leaves the race for the backup job wide open and increasingly competitive.
Shikenjanski, a former preferred walk-on from Stillwater, Minnesota, has made a strong case for the backup role this spring. Wittke, who transferred from Virginia Tech last offseason, is also in the mix. The rest of the quarterback room includes true freshman Jackson Kollock, a four-star recruit, and walk-on Jeremiah Finaly.
With Pyron on the move and the spring transfer portal window closing on Friday, April 25, the Gophers may now be in the market for a more experienced quarterback to add depth to their roster. Pyron will have two years of eligibility remaining as he searches for a new opportunity.
