The Gophers men’s basketball team extended a scholarship offer to top-ranked Minnesota recruit Christian Wiggins from Wayzata on March 30, but it wasn’t enough, as he committed to Iowa State on Saturday.
Christian Wiggins, a 6-foot-4, four-star recruit ranked No. 52 in the 2026 class by 247Sports Composite, is Minnesota’s top player, surpassing talents like Dothan Ijadimbola (Totino-Grace), Jayden Moore (Hopkins), and Ryan Kreager (Faribault). As a junior, he led Wayzata to a Class 4A state title, scoring 21 points against Cretin-Derham Hall. He’ll play one more season for Wayzata before joining T.J. Otzelberger’s Iowa State Cyclones.
Despite a late scholarship offer from Niko Medved’s Gophers on March 30, Wiggins, who also had offers from Wisconsin, Iowa, Creighton, and Northern Iowa, chose Iowa State, likely due to a stronger connection with their staff. Medved, new to Minnesota’s helm, faced challenges in catching up. Otzelberger, meanwhile, continues to tap Minnesota talent, having previously secured Curtis Jones, Nate Heise, Gabe Kalscheur, Robert Jones, Demarion Watson, and Eli King.
While the transfer portal shapes rosters, high school recruiting remains crucial, and Medved’s team has work to do to dominate in-state recruiting.
