Red Wings Links to 40-Goalscorer in Free Agency

After missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season, NHL insider Max Bultman predicts that Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman will take bold action in the offseason. Bultman suggests the team will target high-impact forwards, specifically naming Vancouver Canucks’ Brock Boeser as a potential signing. With the playoff drought ongoing, key players like Dylan Larkin nearing 29, and Alex DeBrincat approaching free agency, Bultman emphasizes that Detroit must act decisively.

He lists other notable free agents like Mitch Marner, Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Nikolaj Ehlers as options, but stresses the need for a significant move rather than relying solely on internal growth. Boeser, in the last year of his $19.95 million contract, had 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games, with a career-high 40 goals the previous season.

Boeser Unlikely to Return to Canucks

Brock Boeser, drafted 23rd overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2015, has indicated that re-signing with the team is unlikely as he approaches free agency. Speaking to Sportsnet, Boeser expressed disappointment, stating, “Honestly, it’s unlikely at this point. It sucks, it’s unfortunate.” He aims to focus on playing well before addressing his future. Boeser acknowledged the Canucks’ challenging season, marked by injuries and distractions, which contributed to their playoff miss. “It hurts.

We wanted to be in the playoffs again so bad,” he said, noting the team’s potential when healthy. Despite his 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games, Boeser struggled at times, reflecting the team’s broader difficulties. A two-time NHL All-Star, Boeser’s career-high 40 goals last season highlights his value as he heads toward free agency.

Red Wings Players Impressed With New Coach

After firing Derek Lalonde mid-season and hiring Todd McLellan, the Detroit Red Wings showed marked improvement, finishing the season at 39-35-8. Captain Dylan Larkin is optimistic about the team’s future, crediting McLellan’s detailed coaching style. “Todd is really detailed. Very impressed by him,” Larkin said, highlighting McLellan’s experience and ability to drive success in the NHL.

Larkin believes a full season with McLellan, starting with training camp, will elevate the team. He emphasized the importance of upcoming team meetings, encouraging players to absorb feedback and return with a positive mindset for the next season.
