On Sunday, the Gophers strengthened their secondary by adding John Nestor, a transfer from Iowa who shared his commitment to Minnesota via X.
Nestor, a 5-foot-11, 196-pound defensive back from Marist High School in Chicago, appeared in 10 games as a backup cornerback for Iowa in 2024, recording 14 tackles and a fumble recovery. As a freshman in 2023, he also played in 10 games and notched two tackles.
His arrival provides Minnesota with another experienced option in the defensive backfield as they look to replace key 2024 contributors Justin Walley, Ethan Robinson, and Jack Henderson. Nestor has two years of eligibility left.
He entered the transfer portal on Wednesday and made his commitment during a visit to campus over the weekend. As a high school prospect, he was rated the No. 13 player in Illinois and the No. 44 safety nationally in the 2023 class by 247Sports.com. Nestor also received scholarship offers from other Power Four programs, including Minnesota, Purdue, Iowa State, and Kansas.
