Taulia Tagovailoa Considering Transfer Portal If NCAA Allows It, Maryland Coach Says
Maryland Terrapins quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa is considering entering the transfer portal in pursuit of a waiver for a sixth year of eligibility, as revealed by coach Mike Locksley during an interview on 105.7 “The Fan” in Baltimore.
According to Jeff Ermann of Inside MD Sports, Miami is being eyed as a potential destination if the NCAA grants Tagovailoa an additional season. Tagovailoa’s performance for Maryland this season includes a 66.4% completion rate, 3,377 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Throughout his five collegiate seasons at Alabama and Maryland, he has amassed 11,356 yards, 77 touchdowns, and 37 interceptions, with a 67.1% completion rate. Locksley explained that Tagovailoa’s decision to forgo the bowl game was driven by a desire to explore future opportunities, such as the NFL or transferring.
While it seems on paper that Tagovailoa has exhausted his eligibility, having utilized the free year due to COVID in 2020 and being ineligible for a medical redshirt, Locksley emphasized Tagovailoa’s arm talent and the possibility of him securing a spot on an NFL roster, whether through a late-round draft pick or as an undrafted free agent.
