Red Wings recall Berggren, Czarnik and Edvinsson from Grand Rapids under emergency conditions
The Detroit Red Wings have made roster moves by recalling right wing Jonatan Berggren, center Austin Czarnik, and defenseman Simon Edvinsson from the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL) under emergency conditions. This decision comes alongside placing forward Christian Fischer on injured reserve, retroactive to December 23.
Berggren, aged 23, has played seven games with the Red Wings this season, contributing four points (2-2-4) along with a plus-four rating and two penalty minutes. In the current AHL season, he has recorded 18 points (7-11-18) and 16 penalty minutes in 19 games with the Griffins. Berggren had a notable performance in the 2022-23 season, ranking among the Red Wings’ leaders in various categories. Since being selected by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Berggren has accumulated 32 points (17-15-32) and 18 penalty minutes in 74 NHL games.
Czarnik, aged 31, has played 16 games with the Red Wings this season, registering one assist, six penalty minutes, and 12 shots in an average time on ice of 8:36. In the current AHL season, he has contributed seven points (3-4-7) and six penalty minutes in nine games with the Griffins. Czarnik has a history of playing in parts of eight NHL seasons with various teams, accumulating 51 points (18-33-51) and 34 penalty minutes since 2016-17. He
also has an AHL background with 269 points (98-171-269) in 279 games.
Edvinsson, aged 20, made his season debut with the Red Wings on December 23, logging 13:18 time on ice. In the current AHL season, he has played 25 games with the Griffins, leading the team’s defensemen in various categories, including goals (6), assists (10), points (16), power play goals (2), game-winning goals (2), and shots (57). Selected by the Red Wings in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Edvinsson made his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season, recording two goals and 12 penalty minutes in nine appearances.
These player movements provide additional depth to the Red Wings’ roster in response to the current situation, including placing Fischer on injured reserve.
