Breaking news: Miami transfer player has officially chosen UCLA, providing insights into the factors that influenced his decision.

Former Miami edge rusher Collins Acheampong has decided to join UCLA. Although he hasn’t received a rating in 247Sports’ transfer rankings yet, he was previously recognized as a consensus four-star prospect, holding the titles of the 179th nationally ranked player, 23rd defensive lineman, and 15th player from California in the class of 2023.

Expressing his excitement about returning home, Acheampong, who attended Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) Santa Margarita for his senior year, emphasized the great opportunity UCLA offers him. He acknowledged UCLA as the first school to notice and offer him a scholarship, expressing gratitude for the strong relationships he has built there.

Acheampong’s decision to transfer was motivated by both football considerations and a desire to be closer to family. He highlighted the significance of having loved ones around and the opportunity to play under the guidance of one of the nation’s best defensive line coaches, Ikaika Malloe.

Reflecting on his time at Miami, Acheampong revealed the challenges he faced, including injuries and coaching changes. He never felt comfortable in South Florida and believes UCLA will provide the support and familiarity he needs. Acheampong, who will enroll at UCLA later this month, is currently on a road trip with his mother from Miami to California.

While acknowledging that he is not yet at 100% fitness, Acheampong expressed confidence in being fully ready for spring practice after recovering from a knee injury. Despite limited game experience, he learned fundamental aspects of football during his time at Miami and is eager to contribute to UCLA.

Acheampong’s journey from Ghana as a basketball player to becoming a highly sought-after football recruit has been marked by setbacks, including a school shutdown due to Covid, but his athletic 6-foot-7, 270-pound frame and promising skills suggest he could become an impact player for UCLA.
