Prior to joining the Commanders in the 2022 NFL draft, Howell had a noteworthy collegiate career with the North Carolina Tar Heels, breaking both school and ACC records over three years.

During his time with the Tar Heels, Howell faced the Virginia Tech Hokies three times, with two memorable clashes at Lane Stadium during the Justin Fuente era.
