Restlessness will persist in the Bronx until the New York Yankees secure a top-tier pitcher ahead of the commencement of the 2024 MLB season. Having already made a notable move by adding LF Juan Soto to their outfield, the Yankees have followed up with several supplementary signings, positioning themselves for a potential enhancement over their 82-80 record in 2023.
Shane Bieber Headlines New Slate of Pitchers on Yankees’ Radar
According to Patrick McAvoy of Fan Nation, Bob Nightengale of USA Today has confirmed that the New York Yankees are actively pursuing another top-tier pitcher following their unsuccessful bid for Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Nightengale mentioned that general manager Brian Cashman is actively exploring options, with recent efforts focused on acquiring Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians. Nightengale stated:
“The Yankees have engaged in discussions for Jesús Luzardo of the Miami Marlins and Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Guardians. They may also enter the Josh Hader trade market. However, the Yankees are committed to spending, trading, and doing whatever it takes to ensure they go deep into October.”
Shane Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young award winner, has consistently delivered strong performances. Despite a slight increase in his ERA (3.80) and FIP (3.87) in 2023, Bieber concluded the season with a 1.8 WAR and achieved his fifth complete game since entering the majors in 2018.
Yankees Have the Money and Need to Facilitate a Deal For Bieber
In financial terms, the New York Yankees have the resources to pursue Shane Bieber. Owner Hal Steinbrenner has expressed a willingness to spend on top-tier talent, emphasizing a commitment to not surpassing the $300 million annual payroll mark. Acquiring Bieber aligns with this dual objective.
However, the Yankees are also linked to other appealing free agents and trade prospects in a fiercely competitive market. This makes the remainder of the winter a continuous cycle of speculation, with uncertainties lingering until the commencement of Spring training.
