How the Browns balanced attack offense can exploit the Ravens defense

The Browns offense is gearing up for a significant test on Sunday as they prepare to face one of the top defenses in the league, the Ravens. The upcoming showdown at M&T Stadium carries implications for the AFC North standings. The focus of the Browns offense is centered on showcasing their improved performance against the formidable Ravens defense.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson emphasized the need to concentrate on dissecting the Ravens defense, paying close attention to key elements such as linebackers, edge rushers, and the secondary. Reflecting on a challenging Week 4 encounter where Watson missed the game and rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson stepped in, the Ravens defense proved formidable, limiting Thompson-Robinson to 121 passing yards, a 52.8 percent completion rate, and a 25.3 passer rating, resulting in a 28-3 loss for the Browns.

Now, with Watson back leading the offense, the Browns are eager for a rematch against the Ravens. The Ravens defense has been outstanding this season, conceding only nine touchdowns, leading the league in points, ranking second in yards allowed, and topping the charts in sacks and opposing QB rating.

The Ravens’ defensive prowess is exemplified by linebacker Roquan Smith, boasting 87 total tackles and contributing significantly to the team’s success. Patrick Queen is also having a standout season with impressive stats, while multi-time Pro Bowlers Marlon Humphrey and Jadeveon Clowney add further depth to the formidable Ravens defense.

According to Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, the defense has no weaknesses, with their speed, discipline, and strategic disguises making them a formidable force. However, the Browns see opportunities to exploit two instances this season where the Ravens defense faced challenges.

In Week 3 against the Colts, the Ravens allowed QB Gardner Minshew to complete over 60% of his passes, and RB Zach Moss rushed for 122 yards. In Week 8 against the Cardinals, QB Joshua Dobbs threw for over 200 yards, and the Cardinals had success both passing and rushing, resulting in close games that the Ravens narrowly lost.

The Browns, known for their balanced offense, plan to leverage these insights. In games where Watson played a full match, the Browns achieved over 100 rushing and passing yards in three out of four instances. Maintaining a balanced attack has been a key to success for the Browns, evident in their recent game against the Cardinals where they scored both rushing and passing touchdowns, a feat accomplished five times this season.

Running back Jerome Ford emphasized the effectiveness of a balanced attack in keeping defenses on their toes, stating that it makes the linebackers more cautious and forces the defense to consider every option. As the Browns prepare for the Ravens, they are optimistic about their ability to exploit potential weaknesses and showcase their balanced offensive capabilities.
