JUST IN: Washington in motions for new head coach to replace Ron Rivera

The Washington Commanders are solidifying their next leadership structure, beginning with the recruitment of Adam Peters from the San Francisco 49ers to oversee the team’s front office. This move followed the appointment of former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers to spearhead the search for a new head coach and front office leader. The swift decision to add Peters suggests that Washington is progressing methodically in its quest to find a replacement for Ron Rivera. The leading candidate for the head coaching position appears to be Ben Johnson, the current offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, Johnson is expected to assume the role of the Commanders’ next head coach once the Lions’ season concludes. According to sources cited by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, there is a strong belief that Peters was preselected to be the next General Manager, and likewise, Johnson has been preselected to coach the Commanders.

While Commanders owner Josh Harris is reportedly “enamored” with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, the decision to bring Peters on board to manage the personnel department appears to rule out the possibility of Belichick taking control. Belichick, known for desiring complete roster control, wouldn’t have that autonomy in Washington, diverging from his longstanding authority during his tenure with the Patriots.

Ben Johnson always made sense for the Washington Commanders

Ben Johnson, at 37, is considered a rising star in the head coaching arena, attracting attention from multiple NFL teams, including the Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Chargers, Atlanta Falcons, and the Washington Commanders. His candidacy is generating significant interest, leading to expectations of a competitive bidding war for his coaching services.

The enthusiasm surrounding Johnson is justified by his impressive track record. Over his two seasons as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, he has orchestrated two top-five scoring offenses. Johnson played a crucial role in the resurgence of Jared Goff, transforming him into a franchise quarterback, and is recognized for implementing an innovative offensive system.

The decision to bring in Adam Peters to oversee operations in Washington strongly suggests that Johnson is the preferred choice for the head coaching position. The hope is to replicate the success seen by the San Francisco 49ers, who, in 2017, appointed the then-young offensive mind Kyle Shanahan as head coach and paired him with general manager John Lynch. Notably, Peters was part of the transformative leadership overhaul in Northern California during that time. Washington aims to recreate this winning formula by combining Johnson’s coaching prowess with Peters’ strategic leadership.
