DONE DEAL: Miami Hurricanes transfer quarterback key star player

The Miami Hurricanes seem to have secured their starting quarterback for the 2024 season. Following a tumultuous 2023 season with Tyler Van Dyke, who has since transferred to Wisconsin, at the helm, the team actively pursued options in the transfer portal.

Despite their efforts, when Cam Ward, the former Washington State signal caller, chose to enter the NFL Draft rather than transferring for a sixth college football season, concerns arose for Miami. In an attempt to sway Ward, the Hurricanes spared no expense, treating him and his family to a lavish dinner at one of South Beach’s most expensive luxury restaurants. They even enlisted rapper Rick Ross to assist in the pitch, backed by a substantial NIL package potentially reaching seven figures to ensure his generous compensation.

However, Ward’s decision to enter the NFL Draft left the ‘Canes and coach Mario Cristobal searching for alternatives. Finally, on Monday, they successfully identified their chosen quarterback.

Miami secured a commitment from Reese Poffenbarger, a quarterback from Albany in the FCS. Hailing from Maryland, Poffenbarger made a significant impact during his redshirt sophomore season, topping the FCS in both passing yards with 3,614 and touchdowns with 36. His exceptional performance led the Great Danes to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs.

Poffenbarger initially started his collegiate career as a walk-on at Old Dominion but opted to transfer to Albany ahead of the 2022 season, marking a pivotal move in his football journey.

Transfer QB Reese Poffenbarger Explains Why He Chose Miami Hurricanes

Reese Poffenbarger expressed his sentiments about the move, stating, “Albany will forever have a place in my heart, and we did a lot of special things.” However, he emphasized that he decided to move on to position himself for a shot at competing for a national championship and pursuing his dream of playing in the NFL.

When asked about choosing Miami, Poffenbarger found the decision straightforward. “Who has the roster and people in place to make a push to win every game that they play,” he explained. Poffenbarger highlighted Miami’s stacked roster with players capable of excelling at the NFL level. He noted the elite talent at wide receiver and tailback, along with a formidable defense capable of stifling opponents.

As for whether he can match the performance of Cam Ward, Poffenbarger acknowledges that only time will reveal the answer. Nonetheless, his commitment fills a significant void for the Hurricanes, replacing the uncertainty they faced before securing Poffenbarger.
