Georgia Football is experiencing a challenging week in its program history, or so it seemed initially. My apologies, it appears I confused the teams – it’s actually Alabama that’s facing some setbacks. By now, you’re likely familiar with the narrative: Caleb Downs, at the last minute, opted to transfer to Ohio State instead of Georgia. Despite widespread predictions favoring Georgia as his destination, Downs chose a different path.
While this turn of events is disappointing from a Georgia standpoint, it’s not as detrimental as it may initially seem. Although Downs would have been a valuable addition to the Dawgs roster, the safety position in Athens is not in desperate need of additional depth or talent. The safety position is already rich in talent, primarily comprising 4 and 5-star players, even if their eligibility hasn’t fully expired. Kirby Smart, Georgia’s head coach, likely isn’t losing sleep over this decision.
On the flip side, Ohio State is enjoying a promising start to the offseason, gaining attention from the media as a national title favorite due to roster additions and coaching hires. Nevertheless, Vegas maintains that Georgia remains the favorite, and despite any bias, the Dawgs are widely considered the most talented team in the country.
Alabama fans are reveling in the fact that Downs didn’t join Georgia, taking to social media to taunt the Georgia program and its fans. This behavior sheds light on Alabama’s current standing and the mindset of its fans. The irony is evident as Bama supporters mock Georgia for not securing one of their key players from the previous season. It’s almost as if any victory is worth celebrating amidst Alabama’s challenging week. There’s a sense of sympathy emerging for Alabama and its fans.
If the rumors circulating on social media hold true, it’s understandable why Downs chose Ohio State. Some suggest he may have received a substantial financial incentive to join the Buckeyes, although the veracity of these rumors remains uncertain. Regardless, best wishes to Downs, and if financial considerations influenced his decision, it’s hard to fault him. Other rumors suggest Downs was spotted in Athens, and Georgia had to navigate through bureaucratic hurdles to ensure his eligibility to play for the Dawgs and enroll at UGA.
Just some backstory, I spoke to multiple people that saw Caleb Downs in Athens last night. I confirmed that again today with other individuals as well.
Some sort of dramatic change happened at the 11th hour

It appears that there are conflicting reports regarding Caleb Downs’ commitment and enrollment, as suggested by The Bulldawg Report’s tweet. According to the tweet, Downs committed to Ohio State, but there were also indications that he was enrolling at Georgia and had even moved into a house in Athens. The tweet suggests that an issue with his enrollment process ultimately led to his decision to go to Ohio State, with Kirby Smart doing his part but facing a snag on the school’s end.
If this information is entirely accurate, the tweet expresses a desire to eventually learn the details of this unconventional recruitment process. Despite any concerns among Dawg fans, the tweet reassures them that Kirby Smart has successfully assembled the top recruiting class and one of the best transfer portal classes in Athens. Despite the ups and downs of Downs’ situation, Georgia remains one of the most talented teams in the country and is still considered the betting favorite for the 2024 season.
