After a decade in the NFL, veteran running back Rex Burkhead has decided to retire from professional football.
Announcing his retirement via Instagram on Monday, Burkhead expressed gratitude for his 26-year journey in the sport, extending thanks to coaches, trainers, team staff, and others who supported him throughout his career.
Burkhead began his NFL journey with the Bengals in 2013, spending four seasons with the team before joining the Patriots in 2017. During his tenure with New England, he played a significant role as a dual-threat back alongside Tom Brady, contributing to the team’s Super Bowl LIII victory. In 2021, Burkhead joined the Texans, where he played for two seasons, experiencing both a notable start and a diminished role within the team’s running back lineup.
Closing his career at 33 years old, Burkhead leaves behind a legacy of 1,908 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns, and 192 receptions for 1,534 yards and nine TDs.
