Despite participating in practice this week, Prince Tega Wanogho, the former Auburn offensive tackle, will not be activated from injured reserve and will consequently miss Super Bowl LVIII.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Friday that both Wanogho and guard Joe Thuney would be sidelined for the NFL championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Thuney, who was named a first-team All-Pro selection at left guard this season, sustained a pectoral injury during the AFC playoffs, causing him to miss the AFC Championship Game.
While Thuney did not participate in practice this week, Wanogho did return to training on Jan. 24. However, despite his return, the Chiefs have decided not to reinstate him to the active roster due to a quadriceps injury that ended his season prematurely.
Wanogho, the lone former Auburn player on the Super Bowl LVIII rosters, being unable to play marks the end of Auburn’s eight-year streak of having an alumnus in the Super Bowl, which stands as the longest streak in the Tigers’ history. Wanogho has been on injured reserve since Sept. 27 after suffering a quadriceps tear earlier in the season.
Selected in the sixth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020, Wanogho is currently in his third season with the Chiefs. Despite primarily serving as a reserve, he appeared in every game last season when Kansas City won Super Bowl LVII.
This season, Wanogho took on the role of the Chiefs’ swing tackle, seeing limited action in the first two games before his injury against the Chicago Bears, where he played both offensive and special teams snaps.
