In 2022, when Florida was on the hunt for a new basketball head coach, they sought advice from Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl regarding one of their potential candidates, Todd Golden, who ultimately became their choice.
Pearl expressed his deep admiration for Golden, highlighting his exceptional qualities as a coach and as a person. He emphasized Golden’s outstanding character, his dedication to the players, and his commitment to doing things the right way. Pearl acknowledged Golden as one of the most promising young coaches in college basketball and endorsed his selection by Florida. He also mentioned his personal connection to Golden, having worked together in the past and maintaining a close friendship.
Despite Pearl’s endorsement, his Auburn team fell to Golden’s Florida squad with a score of 81-65 in a recent game. This loss left Auburn with a 19-5 record for the season, trailing one game behind in the SEC standings.

When advising Florida about Golden, Pearl stressed his exceptional basketball acumen, his strong rapport with players, and the positive influence of his family. He challenged Florida officials to find a better candidate, confident in Golden’s abilities despite any concerns about his experience.
Pearl’s relationship with Golden dates back to their time together at the 2009 Maccabiah Games, where they achieved success as coach and co-captain, winning the gold medal. Golden later served as an assistant under Pearl at Auburn before advancing to head coaching positions, first at San Francisco and then at Florida.
Golden acknowledges Pearl’s significant role in his career, recognizing that he wouldn’t be where he is today without Pearl’s mentorship and support.
